Just saying it doesn't make it true

For some reason, it seems like I pick on Red Lobster. It's not a personal thing, it just happens.

Gordie Meyer sent this over (from Restaurant News):

Red Lobster Says It's From Maine

ORLANDO, FL -- Nearly four decades after it was launched in Florida, Red Lobster has decided it hails from the state of Maine--despite there not being a single unit in the Pine Tree State.

"We've given consumers a lot of clues over the years we're from Maine," president Kim Lopdrup told a group of analysts. "If you look at our menu, it's the only state identified on the menu. That is where consumers are convinced we're from.

 "We're from Maine," Lopdrup stressed.

That may come as a surprise to Maine residents, who have to venture well out of state just to enjoy a meal at Red Lobster; the nearest unit is in Wethersfield, CT--some 137 miles away.

Maine restaurateurs weren't buying it either. "They were from Maine and they pulled out," said Scott Belanger, manager of the Sea Basket Restaurant in Wiscasset, ME. "Why aren't they here serving the great people of Maine?"

"If the company would like to claim their roots, like ours, are on the shores of New England," added Susan Paquete of the Weathervane Seafood Restaurants chain, "then perhaps they should try living with and serving the fine people of Maine."

yes,its true

like 'uno's chicago grille' pizza that is based in...boston

That's just wacky. And a good way to make the good people of Maine a little mad!

Isn't it amazing how everyone tells it like they think we want to hear it!

It must be true, a big, trusted company told us so. Why is it that so many companies create their own "truth" and then expect us to believe it?

I'm from Sikeston, but I don't live there... I think its reasonable to say that company is from Maine if they started in Maine and were influenced by the culture of Maine.

If we're talking about advertisers being liars look no further than some of the commercials out there now surrounding HD programming. Every available source claims to have the "most" HD yet we all know that is impossible. One of the ads I caught today used "recent" date from 10/2006. It's amazing that people still believe anything that is marketed.

Its this type of behaviour that creates distrust in the industry and therefore has a negative impact on customers. how can customers build profitable relationships with customers if they don't trust them?

What an interesting way to get people interested in reading! Book trailers are like movie trailers, but for books! You can find them all over the internet now, but here is a site that's featuring them on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/booktrailers

Sounds like Hillary Clinton is their Chief Marketing Officer....

Hillary? how about Mrs. Obama?

Thanks Seth for helping reveal the "lies" in marketing, but I wish it wasn't necessary.

Why can't marketing be about matching the person in need to the product that works?

Color me naive I guess.

Hasn't it always been the same? Our world leaders often lie through their teeth "to protect the public" they rationalise. Can we expect better from corporations?

People from Maine do not eat/get their lobster at Red Lobster... they have the real thing all around them. Lobster shacks, fisherman selling off the back of their pickups, etc.
Red Lobster was in Maine at one point but shuttered the locations for that very fact. Red Lobster is for non Maineiacs.

my 2 cents, i do not personally think the concept of this book or this blog submission is to "exposed lies" but rather teach us, marketer to "tell real stories"
The title of the book is just a cliché
and this lobster case is an example of "don"t"

Finally, someone who has picked my brain! Please contact my husband right away to let him know he should stop talking to everyone who calls him!

Maybe they are from Main st.

How funny! I grew up on Red Lobster. It was my Grandmother's favorite. I just always assumed that they were a New England thing. With all of the fishing boat photos on the walls and the big "catch of the day" signs I guess it's just brilliant subliminal suggestions.
